As much as its explicit meaning

Doesn’t being faithful to an author mean preserving the structure, the tone, the pace of his language as much as its explicit meaning?

War and Peace or The Brothers Karamazov could not be written in French anymore than Madame Bovary or Le Rouge et Le Noir could have been written in Russian, and that for a thousand reasons, of which the first, which is amply sufficient, is that the language of a novel, of a story, no less than of a poem, is not the clothing of a certain mode of thinking, of perceiving, of feeling, of loving, but is that mode itself.
